Rum was a stunning Welsh Cob, born in 2000. He was at livery at Redwing as a young horse but did not want to be ridden and showed it in the best way he could. His owner tried hard to solve the problem and sought help from some very experienced riders, who could not sit his bucking fits. We were convinced he had a back problem, although it was never diagnosed by the vets or physios his owner provided for him, and he had been in the sanctuary ever since.
He has a very affectionate nature and he is happy in retirement, like some others who proved too much to handle as riding horses. We believe it is cruel to persevere beyond a reasonable amount of patient handling and training. There is always a reason for a horse’s “bad” behaviour, whether it is pain or fear from a previous experience.
